Suba North Member of Parliament (MP) Millie Odhiambo on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, threatened to take action following Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s decision that declared Kenya Kwanza the majority side in the National Assembly.

Speaking after the verdict, Odhiambo made it clear that Azimio was aggrieved by the ruling and that they did not agree with it.

Odhiambo, who served as the minority whip before the High Court ruling, vowed to take action following the speaker’s directive.

“As Azimio, we are going to take further action,” Odhiambo emphasised.

He noted that despite the broad-based arrangement, the Kenya Kwanza was still getting decisions in their favour and thus questioned the legibility of the arrangement.

“This government is broad but not based, so don’t call us to be in a broad-based government… As Azimio, we very respectfully disagree with your communication,” the aggrieved Millie Odhiambo said.

Speaker’s reaction

Reacting to Odhiambo’s sentiments, Wetang’ula told the minority side he duly followed the law in delivering the verdict.

The speaker thus asked Millie and other Azimio MPs to follow his directive.

“That is how the law works. It is not necessarily popular; it is not necessarily likeable; it is just the law,” he insisted.

The ruling

Delivering the verdict on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Wetang’ula informed the house that the High Court ruling did not designate which side was the majority and the minority but only annulled his earlier declaration.

He went on to explain that he had not received a communication from Azimio or Kenya Kwanza announcing changes in its house leadership.

“I have not received any further communication from Kenya Kwanza Coalition replacing the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu, the member for Kilifi, the member for South Mugirango, and the member for Marsabit County as their preferred leadership in the house.

“Similarly, I have not received communication from the Azimio-One Kenya Coalition party replacing the Suna East MP, the Kathiani MP, the Suba North MP, and the Member for Embakasi West as preferred leadership in the house,” Wetang’ula stated.

“Consequently, the leadership of the house remains unchanged,” he ruled.
