Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for attacking the same government machinery he was part of for two years.

In a statement shared on his social media pages on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Wambugu accused Gachagua of hypocrisy and political double standards, arguing that the former deputy president cannot distance himself from the very errors he now points out.

Wambugu noted that Gachagua’s recent public attacks on unnamed powerful figures in government are misleading, given his previous proximity to those same individuals.

He argued that if Gachagua insists the system is rotten, then he too must bear responsibility for what happened during his time in office.

The former MP reminded Kenyans that Gachagua worked closely with the same leaders he is currently portraying as corrupt or untrustworthy.

For that reason, Wambugu believes it is insincere for the former deputy president to present himself as the only innocent party in government when he was deeply involved in its operations.

Wambugu further claimed that the wrongdoings that Gachagua is so eager to expose seem to have ceased only after he was pushed out of the inner circles of power. This, according to him, raises doubts about the authenticity of Gachagua’s newfound moral outrage.

The Nyeri politician, who has been increasingly vocal about Gachagua’s political repositioning since the fallout with him, insists that Kenyans are not blind to the contradictions in his statements.

He called on the former deputy president to own up to his own part in what went wrong during his time in office, instead of pretending to be a whistleblower or reformist.

“Gachagua tells us a person is as bad as the company they keep. Yet for 2 years he kept company at the very top of power in this govt. But he wants us to believe that he wasn’t involved in any bad thing done. Yet these things have somehow stopped after he left,” Ngunjiri stated.

Gachagua’s remarks

This comes a day after the former Deputy President, while in Murang’a, blamed the President for betraying the mountain that overwhelmingly came out to support his ascent to the top seat.

He accused the President of allowing his proxies to mock leaders from the vote-rich region, saying that the people are watching and are waiting for 2027 to unleash their wrath.
