Wamalwa: Our agenda is to end corruption, not shield the corrupt
By Faith Lagat, July 24, 2025Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has renewed his scathing criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of being the most corrupt government since independence.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on July 23, 2025, Wamalwa said the Azimio la Umoja coalition remains committed to rooting out corruption, describing it as their core agenda.
“Our main agenda is to end corruption. And if there is a major corrupt individual in Kenya and the world, it is the president himself,” he said.
Wamalwa went on to accuse the current government of operating in a manner akin to fraudulent schemes, saying, “If there has ever been a ‘wash wash’ government since independence, it is William Ruto’s government.”
One-term push
The former Defence Cabinet Secretary dismissed claims that the opposition lacks a clear agenda, stating that the fight against graft forms the backbone of their campaign. “He said we, as the opposition, do not have agendas, but we stick with the agenda of doing away with corruption,” Wamalwa said.
According to the DAP-K leader, the coalition’s call for President Ruto to serve only one term is gaining ground across the country. “Our ‘one-term’ agenda has gained traction across every part of Kenya. We have a reason to say ‘Ruto must go,’” he said, attributing the momentum to growing public frustration with economic hardships and broken promises.
He further criticised the president for what he termed as consistent dishonesty. “Kenyans have seen and can attest by themselves that Ruto lies and has not fulfilled his promises. Even children know—it is now the third year with no promises fulfilled,” he added.
Economic burden
Wamalwa linked the economic strain facing Kenyans to rampant corruption, claiming that up to 30 percent of public funds are lost through graft. He argued that sealing corruption loopholes would ease the tax burden on citizens. “The minute you seal any loophole that could let in corruption, it will ease the high taxes pressed against the citizens,” he said.
He also referenced several scandals that have rocked the administration, including the Housing Levy, SHA, and E-Citizen systems. “If you take a look at the scandals like that of E-Citizen, SHA, and the Housing Levy, with no coming out clean on these—the fuel levy is higher—they are the great wash-wash themselves,” he stated.
Wamalwa added that President Ruto’s image had drawn global concern, claiming, “In the global listing of corruption, our president is number two after Syria’s president.” He insisted that the opposition’s message remain consistent: “Ruto must go; that’s all we say.”
