Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has praised Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, drawing a sharp contrast between him and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom he accused of disrespect and divisive politics.

Speaking in Wajir on August 24, 2025, Abdullahi commended Kindiki’s approach and conduct when interacting with others, underscoring the differences from his predecessor’s style.

“I have worked with the former deputy, and I am now working with you. The difference is as clear as daylight is from the darkness of night. You are educated, professional, and a person who respects people. Your yes is a yes, and your no is a reasoned no. There are no insults and no threats,” Abdullahi stated.

Support for Ruto

Abdullahi further expressed that the region has chosen to stand with leaders who recognise Kenyan Somalis as integral citizens of the country, rather than those who profile them.

“We have a choice between a group that does not believe that we are integral to Kenya, that we are Kenyans, that our land is part of Kenya, a group that sees us as al-Shabaab, a group that profiles us—and a group that believes that Kenyan Somalis are Kenyans, contributors to this country, and have rights just like every other Kenyan,” he remarked.

The Governor emphasised that the current leadership recognises Kenyan Somalis as equal citizens with full rights.

“So there’s no choice to be made. We will be with those who believe we are Kenyans,” he added.

Political unity

Abdullahi affirmed that the Somali community in the region stands united behind President William Ruto and Deputy President Kindiki.

He pointed out that even ODM leader Raila Odinga, a key opposition figure against Ruto, is now cooperating with him under the broad-based government.

“This time around, we are together to support President William Ruto and you, Deputy President Kindiki. There will be no underhand politics. I also want people to know that even ODM is working with UDA and President Ruto’s government,” Abdullahi said.
