‘Uhuru is solidly in opposition’: Gakuya says after Uhuru-Ruto meeting in Ethiopia
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, February 18, 2026Embakasi North MP James Gakuya stated that the meeting between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto, held on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa alongside Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Abiy Ahmed Ali, had nothing to do with discussions about Uhuru supporting Ruto’s 2027 reelection.
Speaking in a morninginterview with Kameme TV on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Gakuya has said that the retired president Uhuru Kenyatta is solidly behind the United Opposition
“Uhuru has indicated that he is in the opposition, and this is a way of Ruto’s divide-and-rule tactic. Uhuru has been in this country and knows where the country ought to be, and no amount of wooing can change his mind to exit the opposition. There’s no doubt that if the united opposition, William Ruto will be ousted in 2027,” Gakuya said.

Uhuru’s revival of Azimio la Umoja
According to Gakuya, an ally of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, DCP, the unity of opposition to bring up a single candidate will make President Ruto a one-term president.
The outspoken Lawmaker has also hailed the decision by the retired president, Uhuru Kenyatta, to revive the Aziomio la Umoja alliance as a brilliant move to unite the opposition.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta made a move within the Azimio la Umoja coalition aimed at reviving it and making major changes. In the changes made, Wiper patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was named the party leader of the coalition and Calori Omondi as the Secretary General of the coalition, replacing his counterpart in ODM Junet Mohammed.

Gakuya, who is eying the Nairobi governor’s seat on the United Opposition’s side, DCP , has also slammed the pact between the county government of Nairobi and the national government, terming it a loophole for the two levels of government to engage in corruption and embezzlement of public funds.
“What is the role of the county government in Nairobi County? This is definitely a joint venture as we had in the NMS. There is no difference between the pact and the NMS. The only difference is that the staff have just remained under the county government. This is a way of weakening the county government of Nairobi,” Gakuya added.
