UDA’s Hassan Omar reveals key seats to back ODM in by-elections

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Ommar has announced that the ruling party will not be fielding candidates in three parliamentary seats in the upcoming by-elections.

Speaking during the party’s certificate handover programme on Friday, September 26, 2025, Omar revealed that the party will instead back their broad-based partners, Orange Democratic Movement candidates in those areas.

Banisa, Malava, and Mbeere North are among the constituencies the ruling party will be fielding candidates, while the party has opted out of Ugunja, Kasipul, and Magarini parliamentary seats, where they will support an ODM candidate.

“We have agreed with the ODM that they will run in some elections and that we will not field candidates as UDA. For Baringo senate and Mbeere North, Malava and Banisa, UDA will field candidates without any ODM candidate being fielded,” he stated.

“For Kasipul, Ugunja and Magarini, we will allow ODM to field any candidate, but we will join the ODM and go there to support the ODM candidate as a joint candidacy,” he stated.

Omar opined that the decision was reached to avoid unnecessary fights with their broad-based partners in government.

“We work as a team to demonstrate the spirit of broad-based government. The arrangement is to ensure we do not get mired in endless fights with our partners. We look forward to peaceful elections,” he added.

The SG’s sentiments were also mirrored by Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, who hailed the concession achieved as critical.
Kindiki, however, confirmed that they will be fielding candidates in all 17 wards.

“We have made a concession so that our partners in the broad-based association will field candidates in Ugunja, Kasipul, and Magarini. We will also be fielding candidates in all the 17 wards by elections in different parts of the country,” he stated.

UDA candidates cleared to vie include Leonard Njeru for Mbeere North, David Athman Ndakwa for Malava, and Ahmed Maalim Hassan Alio for Banissa constituency in Mandera.

The by-elections are set to be conducted on November 27, 2025.
