Starehe MP Amos Mwago has called out the government for using intimidation tactics to silence political opponents, joining a growing list of leaders who have condemned the sudden withdrawal of Governor George Natembeya’s security.

The move has sparked public debate and intensified concerns about the shrinking space for political expression ahead of heightened political activity in several regions.

Speaking through an X post posted on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Mwago said the recent developments point to a worrying pattern of state interference designed to intimidate outspoken leaders. He said the administration was increasingly targeting individuals who hold dissenting views.

“The Kasongo government has been actively involved in political intimidation, which includes the withdrawal of security details of Governor George Natembeya,” he wrote

Mwago described the action as deeply troubling, arguing that recalling a governor’s security without a clear explanation could only be seen as an attempt to silence political voices.

“This move is a tactic to suppress opposition and undermine democratic processes,” he stated.

His statement echoes concerns raised earlier by Natembeya, who had faulted authorities for withdrawing his security without notice, saying it placed his life in danger and interfered with his county duties.

The Starehe lawmaker warned that such actions have far-reaching consequences for Kenya’s democracy.

Mwago said intimidation of leaders not only undermines public confidence in state institutions but also threatens national stability. “Such actions are strongly condemned as they erode trust in government and threaten stability,” he stated

Mwago urged authorities to respect the rights of citizens and protect leaders rather than target them. He called on state agencies to uphold the rule of law and refrain from actions that could create fear or uncertainty among elected officials. In his message, he reminded the government that leaders must be allowed to serve freely.

“Authorities should respect citizens’ rights and ensure leaders can serve without fear,” the statement reads

Murkomen explains why Natembeya’s security was withdrawn

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on Thursday, November 26, 2025, shed light on the withdrawal of the security detail of several politicians ahead of the by-election set to be conducted across the nation this week.

Speaking in Kasipul, Homa Bay Constituency, Murkomen confirmed that Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya was among the affected leaders. Murkomen said the measure was adopted after police disclosed that some of the officers were involved in criminal activities.

“Other than Natembeya, other politicians too have had their security withdrawn. NPS has reports that officers attached to them are involved in criminal activities. Some have chosen to keep quiet and not to share. Others have decided to go public,” Murkomen said.
