Salasya set to resume presidential campaigns after long break
Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has announced the return of his presidential campaign after taking a long break.
In a series of statements shared on his social media accounts on Monday, February 16, 2026, the first-term lawmaker, who toured the country in 2025 seeking support for his 2027 presidential bid and later took a hiatus, announced that he is now ready to hit the ground running in search of votes.
“Nakuru was so big. My presidential campaign starts again,” Salasya stated.
Salasya further vowed that from now on, he will no longer be critical of governors or party secretary generals, as he was in the past with Edwin Sifuna. Previously, he had questioned the sources of funds Sifuna used for rallies and charitable donations to churches, but he stated that going forward, he will focus solely on his presidential quest.

“From today henceforth, I won’t engage SGs and governor aspirants. I am committed to the presidency and not party position,” he added
He also affirmed that he will not engage in discussions about his Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) position, concentrating entirely on his presidential ambitions.
Salasya’s presidential quest
The announcement comes at a time when Salasya has been adamant about vying for the top seat, a move that saw him travel across the country rallying support. His decision was welcomed by his party leader, Eugene Wamalwa, who applauded the bold move.
Wamalwa challenged Salasya, noting that since they share similar ambitions, he would support him as the party’s presidential candidate if Salasya outperformed him in the nomination process, emphasising that DAP-K is a democratic party.

Wamalwa also suggested that Salasya should be appointed DAP-K’s deputy party leader, replacing Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, who previously held the position but defected to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
At one point, Salasya nearly fell out with Wamalwa after a joke was made that he did not take lightly during a dispute involving another deputy, George Natembeya.
Peter Salasya first caught national attention when he was elected as Mumias East MP under circumstances many described as competitive and interesting, after narrowly defeating Rashid Echesa.
