Former Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament Kabando wa Kabando will vie for the Nyeri Senate seat in the 2027 General Election on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket.

Kabando confirmed his political bid during an interview on K24 TV on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

During the talk show, Kabando expressed confidence that he will be on the ballot in the 2027 polls.

“I will be running for the Nyeri senatorial seat in 2027 shortly, in one year, and I am very optimistic. My party is DCP,” Kabando said.

His announcement formally aligns him with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP as the party continues positioning candidates ahead of the 2027 General Election.

During the interview, Kabando also reflected on the significance of the historic Saba Saba movement, describing it as a defining moment in Kenya’s democratic journey.

“Saba Saba was the turning point because it was what set the movement in a visible way towards the achievement of multiparty democracy the following year,” he said.

Kabando further argued that Kenya’s current democratic challenges stem from governance failures rather than the democratic system itself.

“What we are having today as a setback is abuse, corruption, and incompetence. The challenge of Kenyan democracy is greed,” he stated.

His remarks come as political parties continue laying the groundwork for the 2027 elections, with leaders increasingly declaring their preferred parties and elective positions months ahead of the official campaign period.
