Kabando Wa Kabando to Kang’ata: DCP is the way to go
Former Mukurweini Member of Parliament Kabando Wa Kabando has urged Murang’a Governor Irung’u Kang’ata to join the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), saying the political outfit is the most viable vehicle for leaders seeking to champion the interests of the Mt Kenya region.
In a statement shared on his social media accounts on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Kabando appealed directly to the Murang’a governor, describing him as both a friend and neighbour while encouraging him to align himself with the Democracy for the Citizens party (DCP) associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“My turn now to lobby my Rafiki, my Jirani Murang’a, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, to join DCP; it is the way to go. Ndugu, njoo tuungane na Gìtungati001 RiggyG,” Kabando wrote.

The remarks come amid growing political realignments in the Mt Kenya region as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election. DCP has increasingly attracted attention from politicians seeking an alternative political platform, with its influence continuing to expand across several counties in the region.
Kabando’s call is particularly notable given Kang’ata’s prominence in Murang’a politics and his influence among voters in the county. The governor has, in recent months, maintained that his primary focus remains on securing a second term in office rather than pursuing national political ambitions, declaring that he will not be seeking his re-election on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party’s ticket.
Kang’ata’s DCP admission
However, the latest appeal comes after the Murang’a governor underscored the influence of DCP within the Murang’a county, suggesting that the party has gained significant support among residents.
“I have also affirmed that I know, particularly in my county, DCP is very popular,” he added.

The governor’s comments come days after he joined the Linda Mwananchi movement on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Kivulini grounds in Thika.
In his address, Kang’ata called on Linda Mwananchi movement leaders Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, and Babu Owino to initiate dialogue with DCP party leader and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Sasa nimeambia huyu rafiki yangu Sifuna, wakiwa na Babu Owino na Orengo, watafute Wamunyoro,” Kang’ata said.
He emphasised that his appeal was not driven by political rivalry but by what he described as the need for a better Kenya that works for all citizens.
