Peter Salasya has sparked fresh political conversation after openly backing the late Raila Odinga’s daughter Winnie Odinga to take a central role in shaping the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, November 16, 2025, the Mumias East MP said the party should begin embracing youthful leadership that can carry forward the spirit and legacy of the movement.

Salasya began by expressing his admiration for Winnie Odinga’s growing voice in national politics, saying her presence reflects the values many associate with Raila Odinga’s long-standing leadership.

“The spirit of Baba is with this young girl. I want to see her in Kenyan politics fully. She has got what it takes to lead ODM,” the statement reads.

He added that he prefers to see her fully engaged in Kenya’s politics rather than serving in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), noting that her perspective is needed at home.

“I don’t want her to go to East African politics of EALA; I want her here,” the statement reads.

Salasya highlighted Winnie Odinga’s remarks during the ODM at 20 years celebrations, pointing out that her thoughts on building broad-based political relationships impressed him deeply.

“She spoke so well at ODM 20 about a broad-based relationship, and I want to hear her voice speak every day,” the statement added.

To him, Winnie represents genuine continuity of the ODM story, one built on struggle, resilience, and a commitment to public good.

“She is genuine with continuity of the ODM legacy; the rest are selfish.”

The MP went further to argue that ODM should not wait for the future to empower the next generation of leaders.

Instead, he urged the party to place young, energetic figures at the centre of its vision going forward.

ODM must crown her now, and the young leadership of her, Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino, can make ODM go to places the remaining are goons with interests for their stomachs,” Salasya said.

Salasya’s statement captures a growing conversation within ODM about renewal and generational transition. With Raila Odinga’s absence still heavily felt, voices like his are pushing the party to rethink how it positions itself for the years ahead.
