Sabina Chege weighs in on Gachagua’s 2027 chances

Former Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Chege has weighed in on the debate over Democracy For Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua’s presidential eligibility.

Speaking to a local TV on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Chege stated that the former DP could contest the 2027 election, as he has not exhausted avenues to appeal his impeachment in 2024.

However, the government-allied lawmaker explained why the DP is eligible to run for the presidency despite being impeached.

Eligible?

“I think, unless all avenues of appeal have been exhausted, Rigathi Gachagua may have a chance to vie in 2027. We have cases of impeached people who were cleared at the last minute,” she stated.

“If someone is impeached, they cannot vie for the position, but the question is, have they exhausted the avenues available to them?”

Chege further called for more clarity on the matter, stressing that the matter of people’s eligibility needs to be fast-tracked.

“We have had cases of previously impeached people like Waititu and Sonko, who got a last-minute clearance.

“Waititu’s case was determined, but we have the case of Waluke, who was not barred from vying as he was not sentenced or imprisoned when he registered as a candidate to run. So what we need is to have such matters fast-tracked and concluded.

Gachagua declares interest

Her sentiments come days after Gachagua declared himself the frontrunner in Kenya’s 2027 presidential race, almost a year after his dramatic impeachment in October 2024.

Despite the legal battles surrounding his impeachment, Gachagua insisted that he remains eligible to contest, stating, “I am qualified, and I have support. The Constitution guarantees your right to vie for elective office even if you have been convicted, if you have not exhausted the remedies available in law. The Supreme Court has not made a ruling on my impeachment.”

In establishing his campaign, Gachagua kicked off his bid on Sunday, September 14, 2025, with a visit to his cradle in Nyeri, where he vowed to restore the country to where the late former President Mwai Kibaki left it if elected president.

Home blessing

“I came home to ask for blessings before I begin this journey. As I started this journey, I needed blessings from home,” he said.

He told the congregants that should he be elected president in 2027, he would not overpromise Kenyans on what he intends to deliver.

“I don’t want to promise the country lies that I will build roads, dams, or electricity projects if Kenyans elect me as president. I don’t want to promise lies to the people of Kenya.”

“I only want to restore the Kenyan state to where Mwai Kibaki left us, and a few things we want to do include restoring the healthcare system so that when we go to hospitals, there are drugs, and restoring the education system with the free education that Kibaki left,” he said.
