Raila must pick Kalonzo as his running mate – Mutula Kilonzo

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo and a section of leaders drawn from the Wiper Party have implored ODM Leader Raila Odinga to reserve the running mate position in his Azimio La Umoja movement for Kalonzo Musyoka.

Speaking at a meeting in Wote, Makueni county, Mutula Kilonzo stated that it is only fair if the opposition chief picks Kalonzo as his running mate since he dropped his presidential bid in his favour.

“As Wiper party members, we have really fought for Kalonzo to be in the presidential race. We agreed with Raila in 2017 that he will not contest for the presidency in 2022 and that he will support Kalonzo’s bid. But because Kalonzo has the nation’s interest at heart, he has shelved his bid in favour of Raila. We, therefore, want Kalonzo to deputize Raila Odinga,” he stated.

The vocal lawmaker further stated that the new-fangled political formation is destined to a stalemate should Raila fail to preserve the running mate position for Kalonzo.

Kilonzo added that the coveted position would act as an appeasement to Kalonzo’s supporters and also as reciprocation for his sacrifice.

“There would be a problem…we have nothing to tell the community and the people who support Wiper. That’s it, for Kalonzo to forfeit the presidency for the third time, it must be accounted for something,” the Senator said.

“When we proposed Kalonzo in 2007 to be a vice-presidential candidate, all of us knew including my late father that Kalonzo will take nothing less than the position of a deputy president.”
