Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Secretary for Planning and Economic Affairs, Peter Mbae, has hit back at President William Ruto’s criticism of the opposition as one bereft of an agenda, calling it misguided.

In an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Mbae laughed off Ruto’s continued onslaught against the united opposition, stating that the president has no right to dictate or explain the opposition’s manifesto to them.

Scorecard

“Ruto has no right to ask the opposition for its agenda. Let him bring his scorecard and not tell us what he is doing in his fourth year,” he stated.

Mbae instead castigated the head of state for overseeing a regime that had reneged on its promises and abandoned its core pledges.

“He cannot tell us about bottom-up economics, a good education system, and the promise of 4 million jobs, then abandon all that in the fourth year and start running away. On the agenda, our issues are not for the president to dictate: He is the one who must show what he has done—not us. We want to tell them we are clear in our minds about what Kenyans want,” he added.

Remedy to Kenya’s problems

Mbae, who shared his plight prior to his resignation from government in January 2025, opined that most of the current regime’s challenges can be remedied with proper policy and goodwill, something he stated is lacking in the Kenyan Kwanza administration.

“With a new government, 70 per cent of the issues facing Kenyans—from foreign policy and finance to housing—will be addressed and remedied. What we lack now is proper government policy, along with greed and people’s interests overriding national good. Good governance about procedures, structures, and leadership and not just declarations,” he stated

His remarks come after he fingered Ruto’s government for failing to fulfil its pre-election promises that put them in power after the hotly contested 2022 elections.

“Just ask yourself: Out of the six million who voted for this government, how many would want to vote for them again? They have ruined things, so how can I want to be part of their mess?” he stated.
