Saboti Constituency Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has called on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislators to strengthen their own political bases instead of relying on party leader Raila Odinga.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his X account on February 17, 2025, Amisi emphasized that it is time for new leadership to emerge within the party.

“ODM MPs should now go and seek votes for themselves and give Baba some rest,” Amisi stated.

He underscored the importance of having fresh leadership within the party, asserting that those who prove themselves capable will naturally earn Raila’s endorsement.

“Other potential leaders must emerge and showcase [themselves]. If you prove to be good, you will receive the endorsement of Raila bila jasho,” he stated.

Amisi further warned against overburdening Raila with political responsibilities, arguing that some leaders may attempt to exploit his influence for personal gain.

“We must never misuse the enigma anymore to satisfy the selfish political adventure of lazy and/or retrogressive leaders!” he said.

Additionally, the legislator took a swipe at opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, calling for them to step up their political engagement.

“Wamunyoro should continue his opposition politics, and Kalonzo and his group should increase press conferences from twice a week to twice a day—morning and evening,” he added.

Amisi further urged the youths, particularly Gen Z, to play an active role in shaping Kenya’s political future.

“Gen Z must never slumber; it is your time to contribute to the change that the country desires,” Amisi wrote.

Raila’s next steps

Amisi’s comments come as leaders mull over Raila’s political future following his defeat in the just completed African Union Commission (AUC) elections.

During a televised interview on Monday, February 17, 2025, Belgut MP Nelson Koech stressed the importance of finding a place for Raila within the Kenya Kwanza ruling coalition, citing his experience and political influence.

“Raila Odinga is coming back home. What would he be doing with his energy, with his wisdom, with his experience? I think we in Kenya Kwanza should accommodate him. That experience, that advice, and the counsel that he would give us would help in bettering our country, our society, and our management,” Koech stated.

Koech suggested revisiting the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) Report to explore possible solutions for accommodating Raila.

The NADCO Report resulted from negotiations between President William Ruto’s administration and the opposition, aimed at addressing governance and constitutional reforms following the disputed 2022 elections.

He proposed the possibility of creating a Prime Minister position for Raila Odinga.

“We could even do better by having the office of the Prime Minister,” he stated.

When asked about the status of Musalia Mudavadi, the current Prime Cabinet Secretary, Koech dismissed concerns, clarifying that Mudavadi’s role is distinct from that of a Prime Minister.

“He’s not a Prime Minister; he’s a Prime Cabinet Secretary. But I am merely expressing a thought,” Koech clarified.
