Nyutu warns early opposition presidential pick boosts Ruto’s advantage
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has cautioned the United Opposition against unveiling its presidential candidate too early ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that such a move would hand President William Ruto a strategic advantage.
The opposition honchos are beefing up their camps to suppress Ruto’s reelection bid in the 2027 polls, while the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) boss exudes confidence of defeating his competitors early.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Monday, January 5, 2026, Nyutu said premature disclosure of the flag bearer would allow the ruling side ample time to politically train its guns on the candidate, weakening the coalition before the race officially begins.
“If you now unveil this particular person now, of course, Ruto will train his guns on him. That is why when it appeared like the United Opposition was settling, that is what trained all his guns,” he said.
Nyutu argued that political strategy demands patience and secrecy, noting that early exposure often benefits the incumbent rather than the challenger.
According to the senator, the opposition must resist pressure to name a candidate simply to satisfy public curiosity.

“Anybody would want to know who their competitor is going to be so that you can start working on them,” he said, adding that this is precisely why the opposition should delay its announcement.
The legislator’s remarks come amid growing speculation over who will fly the opposition flag against President Ruto, with several senior leaders already declaring interest in eyeing the ticket.
The bigwings are still deliberating on who will take the mantle to run for the country’s top seat, even as they buckle up for the upcoming contest in the already boiling political chessboard.
For instance, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he is the sole opposition leader capable of unseating the Head of State in the 2027 polls.
Gachagua is keen to get his revenge on Ruto since his ouster from the Kenya Kwanza government and the 2027 General Elections will provide a better chance for the two leaders to fiercely contest in the showdown.

Meanwhile, the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party chief has also explained why the opposition will delay naming its single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
On his part, he has urged patience and unity as he drew on history and his personal experience to make his point.
“Na mimi nilikuwa sina askari. Askari nilikuwa nafikiria ni wangu ni watu ya Ruto. Watu ya kutuweka tumbo mbele. Walituuza sisi sote na bei ya jioni,” he said.
Gachagua emphasised that the opposition intends to field one candidate to challenge the current administration.
“Sisi tutakuwa na one candidate wa kupigana na kasongo. And I want to ask for patience. Msikuwe na haraka. Uchaguzi iko mbali.”

Opposition shaky?
Despite ongoing debate about unity within the opposition, Nyutu dismissed claims that the coalition risks fragmentation if it delays naming its candidate.
He insisted the United Opposition remains solid and focused.
“Nobody should be worried about the United Opposition. Absolutely no one should be worried that the United Opposition will not remain united. It will remain united,” he asserted.
However, he emphasised that unity does not require rushing key decisions. Instead, Nyutu said the choice of a presidential candidate should be treated as a closely guarded secret until the right political moment.
“We must hold that card very close to our chest,” he said, adding that timing will be critical as the 2027 election calendar becomes clearer.
