Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o delivered a pointed political message in his birthday tribute to the late Raila Odinga, framing the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) founder as a leader of principle amid ongoing debates over ideology, loyalty, and the party’s future.

In a letter on his X on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Nyong’o portrayed the former prime minister as a champion of transformative change rather than political convenience.

“He was never content with superficial reform. Democracy without equity is a hollow ritual, and independence without dignity is a betrayal of history,” Nyong’o wrote on X.

The governor drew a moral contrast between conviction and opportunism, subtly scoffing at the current party dynamics, which appear to deviate from the most popular party’s fundamentals.

The post-Raila era is a big litmus test as the faction grapples with competing visions for its future, reinforcing that principle, resistance, and moral clarity remain central to the party’s identity.

“His political journey was marked not by convenience, but by conviction; not by opportunism, but by an unshakeable loyalty to the oppressed and excluded,” he asserted.

“He was the president history owed, but politics denied.”

Leadership, Nyong’o stressed, is measured by courage and principle rather than titles.

“True leadership is measured not by titles held, but by truths defended,” he said, urging ODM to continue Raila’s struggle.

Cementing Raila’s legacy

He also warned against diluting or rewriting Raila’s legacy amid internal party realignments ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The members are divided on the broad-based deal as some have publicly pledged to work with President William Ruto beyond 2027, while others, led by the camp’s Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, have remained hellbent, saying that ODM must have a person to run for the country’s top seat in the upcoming polls.

“There is a commitment to preserve his ideas, to defend his legacy from distortion,” Nyong’o said.

Nyong’o has, however, reminded members that the party was built as an ideological movement, not just an electoral machine.

“ODM was not merely a party; it was a school of thought, a moral community, and a vehicle for progressive imagination,” he quipped.

Meanwhile, Ruto has expressed readiness to negotiate with ODM as he looks to solidify his reelection bid, even as it raises eyebrows from a section of the renowned opposition party who see it as an attempt to weaken the faction’s weight in the political chessboard.

Raila died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing specialised treatment in India and was laid to rest at the end of an era State Funeral at his ancestral home in Kang’o Ka Jaramongi in Bondo Siaya.
