Lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna has told Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna that resignation remains the only honest option for leaders who publicly disagree with the political institutions they serve, insisting that holding onto office while opposing party leadership is politically dishonest.

In a post on his X account on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Miguna maintained that once ideological differences become irreconcilable, stepping aside is the only honourable path.

“One should not cling on to a political party and public office if one strongly disagrees with the political party and head of the government he serves,” he stated.

Referencing Kenya’s political history, he added: “The same reason why Jaramogi Oginga Odinga resigned from KANU and the tyrannical and plundering Jomo Kenyatta regime in 1966.”

Miguna revisits fallout with ODM

Miguna revisited his own fallout with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying he resigned from the Orange Democratic Movement after disagreements over governance and constitutional matters.

“When I disagreed with Raila Odinga on issues of governance, grand corruption in his office by him and his cronies, the failure to implement the constitution, and betrayal of the Kenyan progressive forces in 2011, I resigned from ODM and turned down his reinstatement,” Miguna said.

He argued that leaders who believe in principle should never compromise for political convenience.

Pressure grows after ODM removes Sifuna

Miguna’s remarks come hours after ODM formally removed Sifuna from his position as Secretary-General following a disciplinary process announced by ODM interim Secretary General Catherine Omanyo.

Omanyo said the party’s National Executive Committee unanimously adopted the recommendation to remove Sifuna from office. “The NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the committee’s recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” she said on Monday.

Direct challenge to Sifuna

Miguna closed with a direct message to the Nairobi senator, insisting political courage means walking away when convictions no longer align with party leadership.

“If Edwin Sifuna is principled, he should resign from ODM. Clinging on to ODM is both hypocritical and cowardly,” he declared.
