Nyandarua Senator John Methu has stated that a United Opposition principal with 5 million votes cannot deputise one with 3 million votes.

While speaking during the visit of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to the United Kingdom in London on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the outspoken senator continued explaining that a principal with a higher number of votes should be the flag bearer, followed by the one with fewer votes.

Methu further clarified that this does not mean that he has anything against the other United Alternative government principals, defending that this is clear logic.

He continued heaping praises on his party leader, labelling him as the engine of the United Opposition, with the rest of the bigwigs being the body. He said that this is the reason why they will not allow him to have a long stay in the UK, since he has to be in the country to continue giving the opposition more energy.

“I support all the opposition candidates, but a person with 5,000,000 votes cannot deputise 3,000,000 votes,” Methu stated.

Gachagua’s response

The former Deputy President, on his part, has expressed confidence in the United Opposition, saying they are capable of defeating President William Ruto by a margin of 5 to 6 million votes.

While speaking during the first day of his United Kingdom tour in London in the wee hours of Sunday, May 17, 2026, the former second in command stated that the United Opposition plans to defeat the president with a wide margin that would prevent him from even thinking of petitioning the results in the Supreme Court.

“When I’ve done my arithmetic, we want to give this guy a margin of between five and 6 million so that he doesn’t even go to the Supreme Court,” Gachagua stated.

United opposition’s victory plan

Gachagua further stated that in 2027 their victory is secured and that what they may only be short of is the margin.

He also assured supporters of unity within the opposition, saying that at the appropriate time, they will sit down and produce one candidate who will challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.

He emphasised that he is ready to offer unconditional support to the person whom the entire United Opposition team will rally behind.
