Matiang’i storms Bomet in a daring solo rally
Jubilee Deputy Party Leader and 2027 presidential flag bearer Fred Matiang’i, on Sunday, May 17, 2026, made an unexpected stopover in Bomet Town, drawing crowds as he continues to expand his national political outreach ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary described the visit as an impromptu engagement with residents while travelling back to Nairobi, but the reception he received quickly turned the stop into a mini political rally.
In a statement shared via his official X account moments after the visit, Matiang’i said he was humbled by the enthusiastic reception from residents who turned up to greet him and engage in conversations about the country’s future.
“On my way back to Nairobi this afternoon, I made an impromptu stop in Bomet Town and was deeply humbled by the warm reception from the residents,” Matiang’i stated.
He further noted that he had received genuine affection and encouragement and held candid conversations with the residents, who he says had expressed their desire for him to return when time allows for a more comprehensive engagement.
“I am grateful for the genuine affection, encouragement, and candid conversations with wananchi who expressed their desire for me to return when time allows for a more comprehensive engagement,” he added.
During the Bomet stopover, Matiang’i emphasised unity, inclusivity, and citizen-centred leadership as key pillars of the national conversation.
“The voices, hopes, and aspirations of ordinary Kenyans remain at the heart of our journey to build a more united, dignified, and prosperous nation for all,” he said.

Political significance of Bomet visit
The visit has attracted political attention due to Bomet’s status as a key political stronghold within the Rift Valley region, traditionally viewed as a major support base for President William Ruto.
Matiang’i’s appearance in the region alone, without prominent local political hosts, could be interpreted as a bold political move aimed at testing his appeal beyond his traditional support zones.
The visit could also signal attempts by opposition-aligned leaders to penetrate regions previously considered firmly aligned to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Matiang’i’s growing national profile
The former CS has recently intensified public engagements across different parts of the country as he popularises his presidential bid in 2027.
Matiang’i recently sparked fresh political speculation after sharing a message widely interpreted as a signal of possible cooperation with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The statement came alongside photos showing the Jubilee deputy party leader warmly embracing Sifuna during the funeral of the mother of Kisii senator Richard Onyonka, an event attended by several political leaders in Kisii County.
Taking to his official X account on Friday, May 15, 2026, night, Matiang’i, who has pledged to fix the country and engage Gen Z if he forms the government in 2027, emphasised unity, inclusivity, and a shared national agenda, saying Kenya’s future depends on cooperation among leaders committed to reform and good governance.
“For a better future for Kenya, a country governed by the rule of law, sovereignty, and inclusivity, we will work with everyone committed to helping us fix the nation,” Matiang’i captioned his photos with Sifuna.

He added that like-minded leaders would work together to design a long-term governance framework aimed at stabilising the country.
“Together, we will draw the blueprint and lay a strong foundation for a better Kenya for present and future generations,” he stated.
While speaking during the funeral, Sifuna said that he was ready to work with Matiang’i.
“Mheshimiwa Matiang’i, mimi niko tayari kama kiongozi wa Linda Mwananchi kufanya kazi na wewe,” Sifuna said as he reiterated the importance of opposition leaders joining hands in an effort to remove President William Ruto from power in 2027.
