Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i has reaffirmed his commitment to education, describing it as Kenya’s most critical investment in its youth and future.

Matiang’i, who served as Education Cabinet Secretary during retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, made his remarks on Thursday, June 11, 2026, during the official opening of the Dr Zachary Onyonka Nyanguru DOK Mixed Secondary School.

At the time, he described the school launch as a significant milestone in expanding opportunities for the young people.

“Education remains the most powerful investment we can make in our future. Today, I joined the people of Kitutu Chache South for the official opening of Dr. Zachary Onyonka Nyanguru DOK Mixed Secondary School, a significant milestone in expanding opportunities for our young people,” he said.

He commended the collaborative efforts between Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka and the area Member of Parliament, Anthony Kibagendi, that brought the project to light.

“I commend all those whose vision and commitment made this institution possible, including Senator Richard Onyonka and the area MP, Anthony Kibagendi. Together, we must continue strengthening our education sector and ensuring every child has access to quality learning and a brighter future,” he added.

Matiang’i call to Govt

In the quest for a better Education system, Matiang’i, who has been vocal on the state of the nation’s education, has recently called for a national conversation aimed at streamlining the education sector following the rising cases of student unrest in secondary schools.

Speaking in Meru County, he called on opposition leaders to set aside political differences with President William Ruto in order to save what he described as a sector on a slippery slope.

As parents continue receiving messages on temporary school closures following unrest in secondary schools across the country, Matiang’i says the time is ripe for a national conversation aimed at finding lasting solutions to the perennial problem.

Matiang’i called on President William Ruto to convene an all-inclusive stakeholder engagement before the crisis worsens.

“It is abundantly clear that you have a problem and you have a crisis. And there is no reason to be arrogant and refuse what everyone can see. Mko na shida, and the sector has been very badly mismanaged,” stated Matiang’i.

Pointing to mismanagement in the critical sector as one of the factors driving the unrest, Matiang’i said the issue of school fires should top the agenda of the proposed talks, especially given the rising number of incidents reported in schools.
