By , October 2, 2025

Presidential hopeful and former Chief Justice David Maraga has been awarded the United Green Movement (UGM) party ticket to vie for the 2027 presidency.

This came after an event that was held at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, October 2, 2025, that saw Maraga, who has been moving around the country, declared as the party’s flag bearer.

The event, which was painted green, the signature colour of the party, saw Maraga, who has been telling Kenyans that should he assume the top seat he will uphold the rule of law during his administration, being given the Constitution booklet in both Swahili and English versions. He was also handed a membership certificate.

On top of that, as a member of UGM, he was given a green hoodie as one of the party’s merchandise, and since he is the flag bearer, he was also handed a green flag to take the party to the next step.

Maraga’s presidential quest

Maraga is now set to hit the ground running as he consolidates support from Kenyans. He recently came out to launch a paybill for Kenyans to contribute to his bid. In his estimation, he said that if Kenyans were to contribute Ksh100 each, he would be able to raise enough money for his campaigns.

He defended this move by arguing that the reason most politicians loot public resources is because they used their own money or borrowed from a bank to bankroll their campaigns, so in respect to this, he decided that Kenyans themselves should contribute towards his cause.

His political journey, after maintaining a low profile for a long time since his retirement as the country’s top jurist, has been marred with lots of hurdles. He was heckled in his Kisii backyard during a funeral, forcing him to deliver his speech amid heckles.

Maraga came out of retirement in 2024 after the Gen Z protests. Many Kenyans online came out saying that Maraga was the best option to cure the problems that have long bedevilled the country, such as upholding the rule of law, which many view as a deficiency in the current administration.
