Kivutha Kibwana compares Sifuna’s ODM dismissal to Gachagua’s impeachment
Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has weighed in on the political upheaval in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the dismissal of Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
He drew parallels between Sifuna’s predicament and past high-profile political controversies, urging veteran party leaders to guide the party through what he described as a critical moment. Kibwana highlighted the broader shifts in party dynamics and the emergence of new political alliances that require careful handling.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Kibwana emphasised that experienced figures must act as stabilising forces to prevent mistakes that could have long-lasting consequences.

“Political mistakes can be costly. Edwin Sifuna’s purported dismissal as Secretary General of ODM is like Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment. Linda Wananchi, the earlier progressive wing, and Gren Z/Y are a new equation. James Orengo and the Young Turks of before should act as a support team,” Kivutha Kibwana stated.
He cautioned that overlooking the need for strategic coordination within the party could exacerbate tensions, particularly as factions vie for influence ahead of the 2027 elections. Kibwana stressed that unity and wise guidance are essential to navigate these political shifts and protect the party’s credibility with its supporters.
Kibwana further indicated that the involvement of veteran leaders could provide continuity and prevent ODM from experiencing avoidable internal crises, drawing lessons from previous political battles where a lack of cohesion led to significant setbacks.

He called on all party stakeholders to act with foresight and responsibility, ensuring that emerging leaders are supported rather than left to face political storms alone.
Sifuna’s ouster
The ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, announced that it had relieved Secretary General Edwin Sifuna of his duties with immediate effect.
Speaking in Mombasa, the committee announced that Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo will serve in an acting capacity until a substantive office holder is elected.
“The Party National Executive Committee meeting in Mombasa today has resolved to relieve SG Edwin Sifuna of his responsibilities with immediate effect,” ODM stated.
Sifuna is now expected to make his next move after his removal as the Secretary General of the ODM party. He is expected to announce his move during the press release.
