Kawira Mwangaza hosts united opposition leaders at her Ntumbiri residence
By Mabonga Makhanu, March 8, 2026Impeached former Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza has hosted United Opposition principals at her Ntumbiri residence.
In a statement shared on his social media pages in the early hours of Sunday, March 8, 2026, former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua revealed that he was in the company of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Bedan Muturi and former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi when they paid a courtesy call on Mwangaza and her husband, Murega Baichu, at their Meru home in a show of solidarity following what he described as the cruel impeachment imposed on her by the current regime.

Gachagua noted that at a time of great crisis in the country, past political or ideological differences should not matter, emphasising that the focus should instead be on the future of a nation that he warned was under threat of imminent collapse.
The former deputy president further stated that it was his prerogative duty to ensure that Kenyans remain strong and united in order to deliver a decisive win and achieve national transformation.
Gachagua also assured Mwangaza that they would stand with her every step of the way, adding that any oppression or injustice against a single Kenyan ultimately affects all the country’s 55 million citizens.
United Opposition Mwangaza alliance
Recently, when Rigathi Gachagua was holding an interview with local radio stations from Meru County, he unexpectedly changed his tone regarding Kawira Mwangaza.

In the past, Gachagua had rarely mentioned Mwangaza publicly, but during the interview, he repeatedly cited her in his remarks, praising her and even including her as part of the United Opposition lineup from Meru County.
“Kawira alitendewa kinyama na mimi napinga na nilipinga sana na alitolewa kama nilitoka; nilikuwa nimekataa.”
Despite the fact that three political heavyweights from Meru — including Mithika Linturi — are eyeing the gubernatorial seat under the United Opposition banner, with Mwangaza also being considered a potential contender, Gachagua maintained that there was no conflict.
He stated that Mwangaza was free to join their camp and contest for the seat, assuring her that the impeachment would not necessarily prevent her from running.
According to him, she could only be barred from seeking office if she exhausts all legal avenues and the impeachment is upheld.
“Mimi sijasema sitaki Munya; kama Linturi atakuwa kwa debe kama Mwangaza atakuwa kwa debe, siwatamenyana, na ni wameru wataamua,” Gachagua said
“Nimeambia hata Mama Kawira, asijali; there is no problem, he will be in the car.”
Linturi’s claims on Kawira’s impeachments
Interestingly, Linturi, who in the past had been a fierce critic of Mwangaza and was among the most vocal leaders calling for her impeachment, has recently softened his stance.

The sudden shift in tone by United Opposition leaders did not go unnoticed by political observers, many of whom interpreted it as a sign that it might only be a matter of time
