The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) has unveiled Joseph Nyaga Njeru as its candidate for the Evurore Ward by-election in Mbeere North, Embu County, after he was cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The by-election is scheduled for February 26, 2026, and is one of several local polls arising from resignations linked to the November 2025 parliamentary contests.

PLP announces cleared candidate

PLP, led by Martha Karua, announced Njeru’s clearance on Friday, January 23, 2026, through a post on X, describing the milestone as a collective moment for its supporters and the wider community.

“We warmly congratulate our candidate, one Joseph Nyaga Njeru, on being cleared today by the IEBC to contest the Evurore Ward by-election in Mbeere North, Embu County.”

The people who believe politics can serve dignity, justice, and truth share this moment, not just one individual. As the campaign begins, we walk with courage, humility, and an unshakeable commitment to people-centred leadership. The journey continues, together and with purpose,” the party said.

Vacancy and by-election context

The Evurore Ward seat fell vacant after former MCA Duncan Mbui resigned to contest the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election held on November 27, 2025. Mbui ran on a Chama Cha Kazi ticket associated with Moses Kuria and finished third in the race.

A similar vacancy occurred in neighbouring Muminji Ward, where MCA Newton Karish stepped down to contest the same parliamentary seat. Karish also lost the race, which was won by current MP Leo Wamuthende, prompting IEBC to schedule by-elections in both wards on the same date.

The upcoming polls form part of a broader set of by-elections across the country, following resignations and vacancies linked to electoral realignments at both county and national levels.

UDA, rivals set for contest

The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has also confirmed its candidates for the Embu ward races. On January 23, 2026, the party announced Duncan Mukang’u Jnr as its Evurore Ward candidate, while Peterson Njiru, popularly known as “Weche,” will vie for the Muminji Ward seat.

UDA submitted its nomination papers at the Siakago IEBC offices in Embu County, with the process overseen by UDA chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire.

“We commend them for their courage and commitment to leadership—taking a significant step towards representing and serving our people as members of the County Assembly,” the party said in a statement shared on X by @UDAKenya.

Other candidates eyeing the Evurore Ward seat include Catherine Mururi Kabuthi of UPA and Albert Muchira Kigoro of DP, setting up a multi-party contest.
