Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly criticised President William Ruto over his planned attendance at the G7 Summit in France, accusing him of misleading Kenyans and using foreign trips for personal image building.

He made the remarks on Sunday, June 14, 2026, during a public engagement in Chwele, Bungoma County.

Kalonzo said several government programmes had failed to deliver and described them as dishonest promises to citizens. He pointed to fertiliser subsidies and housing projects as examples of what he believes are broken commitments.

“Fertilisers na kila kitu imekuwa ni makateli, affordable housing ni makateli. Yote haya ya mwana Ruto ni wizi mtupu, wizi mtupu,” he said.

He argued that the government had focused on public relations rather than real service delivery. According to him, ordinary Kenyans were still struggling with the cost of living while key promises remained unfulfilled.

Criticism of Ruto’s G7 Summit trip

The opposition leader also turned his attention to President Ruto’s upcoming participation in the G7 Summit in France. Ruto has said he will represent Africa at the summit and present proposals on development, investment, and global economic reforms.

However, Kalonzo dismissed the claim and questioned the purpose of the trip.

“He says he is being invited by his friend, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron. But Macron came here first and insulted Kenyans,” Kalonzo said.

He added that Ruto’s justification for attending the summit did not reflect national interests. Instead, he accused the president of prioritising personal political branding over Kenya’s needs.

“Eti amemualika, aende akazungumze kwa niaba ya Afrika nzima. Nataka Bwana Ruto ajue mimi kama practitioner wa mambo ya foreign relations, najua wewe unaenda tu kwa maslahi yako, si kwa maslahi ya Afrika nzima,” he said.

Kalonzo argued that leadership on the global stage must be earned through respect at home. He claimed that a leader who lacks domestic legitimacy cannot credibly represent Africa internationally.

Kalonzo also raised concerns about Kenya’s international image, saying controversial statements and diplomatic actions could affect how other countries view the nation.

He warned that foreign governments were observing Kenya’s internal politics closely.

“And we want the French people to take note. Hakuna mtu ambaye anasema watoto wake, Rais wa Jamhuri ya Kenya wapigwe risasi kwa miguu. Hata kukaribishwa huko ni aibu,” he said.

He argued that such incidents damage the country’s dignity and weaken its standing in international diplomacy.

Kalonzo’s remarks came amid renewed criticism of President Ruto’s foreign travel and use of state resources. Former Attorney General Justin Muturi accused the President of extravagant travel, claiming that he uses a private jet fitted with hospital facilities during international trips.

Muturi claimed that Ruto has spent heavily on luxury foreign travel while ordinary Kenyans continue to face economic hardship and rising living costs. He further argued that taxpayers fund the president’s travel arrangements, saying the cost of governance has increased despite earlier campaign promises to improve household incomes.

Claims on Ebola and foreign policy

The Wiper party leader also criticised remarks linked to global health discussions, including claims about Ebola preparedness. He rejected suggestions that Kenya could be associated with Ebola-related importation or preparedness controversies.

“Raisi gani anaweza kwenda ku-import Ebola? Kenya haijakuwa na kesi hata moja ya Ebola,” he said.

“Hata Wamarekani wenyewe wamekana, wakasema huyu Ruto ndiye alienda kuwambia, kuwakaribisha waje wajenge Ebola.”

He further claimed that some foreign policy statements attributed to government officials were misleading and inconsistent with Kenya’s actual public health record.

According to Kalonzo, Kenya should not be dragged into global controversies that do not reflect its reality on the ground.

Call for political change

Kalonzo used the rally to rally political support ahead of future elections, saying Kenyans should reconsider extending the current leadership.

He argued that leadership failure at home would reflect poorly on Kenya’s global reputation.

“Kwa hivyo kiongozi ambaye hana heshima nyumbani, hana heshima duniani kote, huyo ndio mnataka muongezie miaka mingine mitano kweli?” he asked the crowd.

“Hata Wamarekani wenyewe wamekana, wakasema huyu Ruto ndiye alienda kuwambia, kuwakaribisha waje wajenge Ebola.”

He also echoed growing opposition calls for a ‘one-term’ presidency, urging voters to demand accountability and change.

“Wangapi anasema ni one term, one term, one term,” he added.
