Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has fiercely accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of acting above the law and warned that the government is failing to act against serious threats that could destabilize the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said Gachagua’s refusal to appear before constitutional commissions and security agencies exposes the current administration’s leniency and risks inciting violence reminiscent of the 2007/2008 post-election chaos.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, just after Parliament returned from recess, Junet sought the Speaker’s permission to move a motion of adjournment to discuss the former Deputy President’s inflammatory remarks.

He argued that Gachagua’s statements were a veiled threat of repeat violence should the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) meddle with the 2027 elections.

Above the law

Junet condemned Gachagua for disregarding summons from key constitutional bodies including the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

“The other day, we have constitutional commissions that we have given ourselves in this country, like the NCIC, the National Coalition. They have summoned the former Deputy President.

He has refused to appear. He’s above the law. He’s above the Constitution,” Junet said.

He pointed out that Gachagua has refused to respond to allegations of inciting hatred among Kenyans, calling his defiance a threat to national unity.

“If he’s invited by the DCI to record a statement, he refuses. If he’s invited by NCIC, he refuses. If he’s invited by EACC, now, who is going to protect us from this monster?” Junet asked.

Government Inaction

Junet criticized the Ruto administration for what he described as inaction and protection of Gachagua. “The government looks like it is unable to take action against him.

“If this government was formed by ODM, this man would have been in jail by now, I can assure you without any fear of contradiction,” he declared.

He also warned that Gachagua was using innocent citizens as human shields to defend himself while promoting divisions and hatred among communities.

“He’s trying to use people to commit crimes, offenses that can take people to hate, to defend himself,” Junet said.

Call for unity

In his passionate speech, Junet urged Kenyans to reject ethnic and regional politics. He condemned the formation of ethnic political parties and called for unity.

“The constitution does not allow the formation of ethnic political parties or religion-based parties. Political parties are formed for purposes of enhancing democracy by bringing all Kenyans and all communities as part of that political party,” he said.

Junet concluded by condemning the former Deputy President in the strongest terms, labeling him as “embattled, malicious, and impeached,” and appealed for calm and unity among Kenyans ahead of the 2027 elections.
