Junet Mohamed: If Baba was still alive, 60% of this govt would be ODM
By Kenneth Mwenda, February 28, 2026Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed defended President William Ruto’s government and the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) role in it during a recent homecoming event for Principal Secretary Pareno in Kajiado County, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Junet addressed critics who question the implementation of the 10-point agenda—the agreement between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) that led to the broad-based government. He maintained that appointing Pareno as PS contributed to achieving inclusivity.
“In the spirit of implementing the 10-point agenda, ukapanua serikali yako ili tukuwe na inclusivity watu wakuje pamoja,” Junet said.
He criticised those who argue the agenda remains unfulfilled.
“Sasa mtu anataka kuniambia ati 10-point agenda baada haijafanywa na Pareno ni PS. Tena ukaenda mbele, mkasema ya kwamba ODM imelia ya kutosha,” he added.
He pointed out that ODM fought for justice, human rights, and constitutionalism—core elements of the agenda.
“Mmelia mambo ya justice, mmelia juu ya human rights, mmelia mambo ya constitutionalism ambayo iko ndani ya hiyo 10-point agenda. Ukasema wacha nifanye PS ya ODM ndiyo iwe in charge ya human rights, constitutionalism na justice. Mkawaweka Pareno kwa hiyo ofisi. Hiyo siyo implementation ya 10-point agenda?”
Stake in government
Junet reflected on the late Raila Odinga’s influence, saying that if Raila were alive, ODM would hold 60 per cent of government positions.
“Your Excellency, ni ya kwamba baada ya kwenda mbele tena, unajua ni vile tu baba, hatukujua kifo itakuja. Mimi nakwambia, kama Baba bado angeishi, 60 per cent of this government ingekuwa ODM.”
He acknowledged divisions within ODM. Some members want to negotiate within the broad-based setup for 2027 under President Ruto, while others push to exit government and return to opposition.
“Kuna wale wanasema, tuko katika serikali ya broadbased. Tutengeneze mazungumzo ili tunegotiate ndani ya broadbased, tutengeneze serikali ya 2027 tukiwa na President William Ruto. Na kuna aina maoni ya pili wanasema, tutoke kwa serikali, tuende kwa opposition.”
Junet backed staying in government.
“Sisi tuko katika maoni ya kusema tukaye kwa serikali ya broad based, tume-negotiate na UDA tupate vyoo vyetu, tujenge nchi ya Kenya.”
He praised economic inclusivity under Ruto, especially in Migori, highlighting developments like markets, roads, and hospitals that were absent under past governments.
“What is even bigger, ambayo imefanyika katika nchi yetu under President William Ruto, ni economic inclusivity. Sasa hivi kuna masoko zinajengwa, kuna barabara inajengwa, kuna hospitali inajengwa, ndiyo tumeona serikali.”
Junet dismissed calls to join opposition figures.
“Sasa mtu anasema twende kwa Wamunyoro. Mimi huko kwa wamunyoro sijui barabara ni wapi, lakini watu ya ODM hawaezi kwenda hiyo njia.”
ODM eyes deputy president slot
He affirmed ODM’s strength as one of Kenya’s two major national parties, alongside UDA, and noted that ODM plans to field candidates from MCA to deputy president levels in future elections.
“ODM itasimamisha viongozi kutoka MCA mpaka deputy president.”
Supports National Infrastructure Fund Bill
In closing, Junet expressed support for the National Infrastructure Fund Bill in Parliament, calling it innovative, rare in Africa, and aimed at major projects like roads, airports, and dams to ensure food security.
“Hiyo ni kitu ajabu sana. Hiyo mambo yanafanyika kwa very few African countries… Hiyo ni fikra ambayo imeletwa na Rais mwenyewe.”
He added that proceeds from sales like Safaricom and Kenya Pipeline shares would feed the fund.
“Sasa ile mali, ile shares zimeuzwa ya Safaricom, zile shares ambazo zimeuzwa ya Kenya Pipeline, yote hiyo pesa yote itawekwa kwa hiyo fund, Bunge ikipitisha hiyo bill.”
Junet congratulated President Ruto and confirmed Parliament’s support.
“Your excellency I want to congratulate you, and parliament is very happy with you by bringing that bill, and we are going to pass it because that is the future of our country.”
