Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has stated that the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) will be in the opposition benches after the 2027 general elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Amisi stated that the plan involves fronting multiple presidential candidates in 2027 to split votes and trigger a runoff.

He stated that once a second round is secured, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua will use their numerical advantage in Parliament as leverage in post-election negotiations.

“The plan is in place. To field many candidates that will ensure a runoff. And then negotiate with Rigathi Gachagua, who will be penniless and salivating, but with more than enough MPs elected on his party, and you know what that means: ODM back to opposition,” he stated.

“I only pity the broad-based peacocks. The only way to defeat an unpopular regime democratically is to ensure that only two presidential candidates are on the ballot: the new vs. the incumbent. This can be done through citizens’ coercion,” he added.

Raila and Ruto MoU

This comes after President William Ruto and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga, officially signed a working agreement on March 7, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).

Before signing the document, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) counterpart Hassan Omar read out the issues that will be tackled in the agreement.

Speaking after signing the framework, Odinga stated that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the United Democratic Alliance is not a coalition agreement.

He pointed out that the agreement was designed to address the prevailing political, social, and economic challenges in the country.

“Today, you have signed a memorandum of understanding between the Orange Democratic Movement and the United Democratic Alliance. The key goal of the MoU is to help ease the prevailing tensions in the country, console the population, alleviate their suffering, and move the country forward by addressing the critical social, political, and economic issues our people are grappling with today,” he stated.

He emphasised that as leaders of the country’s largest political parties, they had chosen to build a stable nation rather than merely engage in political fights.

“They say any madman can kick down a barn, but it takes a good carpenter to build one. We have agreed to help build a barn for our country, rather than merely kick down what we have,” he said.

Odinga emphasised that the two parties would utilise their influence to establish a comprehensive and inclusive platform to address Kenya’s pressing challenges.

“We’ve agreed to use our parties as a broad platform, bringing together various voices, opinions, and concerns to address the critical challenges facing the country through a formation that is truly national and inclusive in outlook,” he stated.
