National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has told a crowd in Malava, Kakamega County, that money changed hands in Parliament when MPs impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024.

Speaking at the Orange Democratic Movement–United Democratic Alliance Broad-Based Rally on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Junet said an accounting officer handled the funds. He named a legislator as the officer.

“Huyu Gachagua, wache nipatieni story bana. Huyu Gachagua, kwanza hapa, vile mnaona tukiwa na mkubwa wetu waziri. Wabunge wote wa Kakamega wako wapi? Si mnamuona hapa. Si wako hapa. Si wako hapa. Wabunge wote wako na nani? Wako na Oparanya,” he said.

“Sasa wengine wanatuambia kwamba wako na watu. Na wanataka kupeleka sisi kwa mtu ambaye tumefanya impeachment, tumefukuza yeye kazi. Na unajua waziri, wakati tulikuwa tunafukuza Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu kilitembea hapo, huko bungeni. Wacha niseme ukweli. Kuna kitu kilitembea nini? Na accounting officer, alikuwa mtu anaitwa Cheruiyot ndiyo alikuwa accounting officer.”

He added that some people took the money and failed to build proper houses.

“Kama umepata kitu kwa impeachment ya Gachagua, tafadhali jenga boma mzuri. Ile boma nimeona na pesa ya Gachagua haitoshi?” he asked.

Junet claimed the payments had not reached places like Bungoma. He urged those who received the money to stop wasting it in Nairobi and bring it home instead.

Junet dismisses Gachagua camp

The Suna East MP used the speech to reject any alliance with Gachagua. He said the spirit of Raila Odinga could never share space with the former deputy president.

“Spirit ya baba haiwezi kukaa mahali moja na Gachagua,” he declared. He listed leaders such as Wycliffe Oparanya as those who could carry that spirit.

Junet noted that Kakamega’s MPs stood with Oparanya and the broad-based government. He asked the crowd who was ready to follow Gachagua and dismissed the idea as empty.

“Nani yuko hapa tayari kwenda kwa Gachagua? Hiyo ni riswa,” he added.

Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly in October 2024 and removed by the Senate days later. Courts later upheld the decision. Junet’s comments mark one of the clearest admissions so far that money influenced the vote.

The rally formed part of efforts by ODM and UDA to present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections. Junet closed by stating that ODM had already prepared its position and would continue working within the broad-based arrangement.
