Safina Party leader and 2027 presidential hopeful Jimi Wanjigi has unveiled an ambitious plan to replace the 16 per cent Value Added Tax with a lower 5 per cent sales tax as part of his economic reform agenda.

Speaking on Friday, September 26, 2025, Wanjigi said the proposal is aimed at easing the financial burden on ordinary Kenyans and boosting the economy.

“Our solution to overtaxation is simple. Scrap the 16 per cent VAT and replace it with a fairer 5 per cent sales tax,” he said.

He explained that the move would put more money into the hands of Kenyans and stimulate growth.

“This shift will ease the daily struggles of Kenyans and put more money directly into people’s hands. With greater purchasing power, families will spend more, businesses will thrive, liquidity will flow through the economy, and growth will follow. This is the engine of our economic revolution,” Wanjigi added.

The Safina Party leader made the remarks while outlining his manifesto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

FIST Agenda

Wanjigi has anchored his campaign on what he calls the “FIST Agenda.” The plan, unveiled during the Safina Party’s National Delegates Conference at Ngong Racecourse on September 18, 2025, seeks to transform Kenya’s economy and governance.

The FIST Agenda focuses on four key areas: ending debt, cutting taxes, guaranteeing free education and healthcare, and unlocking credit to enable every citizen to prosper.

“That plan is the FIST Agenda: end debt, cut taxes, guarantee free education and healthcare, and unlock credit so every Kenyan can thrive,” Wanjigi said in a statement posted on X on September 19, 2025.

He stressed that his party’s vision is grounded in fulfilling promises made to Kenyans.

“The people of Kenya deserve to be led by a plan that does not deliver false promises, but one that guarantees prosperity, dignity, and freedom from suppression and economic colonialism,” he said.

According to the agenda, the proposed reforms include rejecting the payment of odious debt, providing universal healthcare, offering free primary and secondary education, replacing the 16 per cent VAT with a 5 per cent sales tax, and halting domestic borrowing by the government.

Wanjigi believes that these measures will create a fairer economic system and liberate Kenyans from what he described as political and economic suppression.

He has promised that under his leadership, the government will focus on policies that promote prosperity, dignity, and freedom for all citizens.
