Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Nairobi patron Irungu Nyakera has exerted pressure on opposition leaders to settle on a presidential candidate to face President William Ruto in the 2027 general election, warning that Kenyans could take matters into their own hands if the delay continues.

Speaking on Sunday, July 12, 2026, during a church service attended by former Chief Justice Justin Muturi and other political leaders, Nyakera said the public is waiting for opposition principals to meet and resolve the question of who will carry their presidential flag.

“I also want to thank JB for what you said the other day and what you have refused to say today. And I’m thanking you because us Kenyans, we hope that the principals can soon enough meet and discuss that one thing that every Kenyan wants to know: the flag bearer that is going to take William Ruto home,” Nyakera said.

Public choosing their rep

He warned that failure by the opposition leaders to agree on a candidate soon could see Kenyans rally behind a candidate of their own choice.

“And the message is from the ground: if the principals are unable to do that soon enough, Kenyans will raise their own presidential candidate, and it will be very difficult to move him,” he said.

“We will support you to the very end because we know that you have the character and the integrity to lead Kenya to the promised land,” he said.

Muturi endorsing Kalonzo

These remarks come just a week after Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi said he will support Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency in 2027 if he is not selected as the opposition coalition’s flag bearer.

Muturi made the remarks on Sunday, July 5, 2026, during a church service at ATG Deliverance Chapel in Kamulu, Nairobi. He addressed worshippers and political leaders who attended the service, where opposition unity was a key theme.

“Na kwa hivo mimi nataka kusema nikiwa hapa leo, na Mungu anisaidie. Kama haitakuwa mimi… mimi nitamuunga mkono ndugu yangu Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka kuwa mgombea urais ya upinzani,” Muturi said.
