East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member Kanini Kega has said he is temporarily safe after claiming he survived an armed attack in Nyandarua County on Monday evening, July 13, 2026.

Speaking from what he described as a hideout in Oljororok, Kega said unknown armed men, whom he identified as police officers, pursued his convoy after he concluded campaign activities in Ol Kalou ahead of the parliamentary by-election.

In a video shared on his Facebook post dated July 13, 2026, the former Kieni MP claimed three vehicles carrying armed officers intercepted his convoy as he travelled towards Nyahururu.

“Kenyans, you can see I’m under attack. I’ve been chased by armed police officers. They pointed guns at me. We were only able to escape,” he said.

Kega said his vehicle was sprayed with bullets during the incident. He displayed what he said was the butt of a gun that broke during the confrontation and a live bullet, saying both had been handed over to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kasuku Police Station.

“You wanted to kill me over three vehicles. You have even sprayed my vehicle. I am only alive by the grace of God,” Kanini Kega said.

Incident follows Sunday’s violence

The claims come a day after violence disrupted activities involving leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement in Nyahururu.

On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata said his driver, Gitari, was shot during a political rally in Nyahururu, a claim that police disputed.

The group, which included Kang’ata, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi and coalition spokesperson Caroli Omondi, fled after people disrupted their gathering shortly after a church service at AIPCA Nyahururu Cathedral.

Videos shared on social media showed supporters and leaders running from the scene as the meeting descended into chaos.

The incidents have heightened political tension ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Police yet to respond

Kega said he remained at an undisclosed location after the incident, maintaining that he feared for his safety.

The EALA member said the exhibits he recovered from the scene had been handed over to police for investigation.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has previously urged political parties and supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns and comply with electoral laws as the by-election approaches.

The latest claims add to growing political tension in the region following a series of violent incidents reported during campaigns ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election.
