Inside Ruto’s Ksh10B promise to transform Meru
President William Ruto has outlined a series of multi-billion-shilling development projects for Meru County, promising new road infrastructure, safer transport corridors and improved health services as part of his administration’s push to stimulate regional growth.
The pledges were made during a public rally in Meru, where the President addressed residents and traders while also presiding over the NYOTA Business Start-Up Capital disbursement at Kinoru Stadium.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the President said the projects are aimed at easing congestion in Meru town, reducing road accidents along key borders, and improving access to quality healthcare for residents of Meru and the wider region.
The commitments, valued at about Ksh10 billion, form part of the government’s broader infrastructure and social services agenda.

Speaking on plans to decongest Meru town and modernise its road network, the President said the government had already set aside funds for a major bypass project that will change the face of the town.
“We are changing the face of Meru and turning the town into a modern city through the construction of a KSh3 billion bypass development that will reduce congestion in the town,” part of William Ruto’s statement reads.
The President also addressed long-standing safety concerns along the Tharaka-Nithi–Meru border, an area that has witnessed frequent and sometimes deadly road accidents. He announced that construction works on a key bridge would begin early next year.

“In addition, the construction of Nithi Bridge will commence in February 2026, an investment worth KSh7 billion that will ease the incidents of fatal accidents along the Tharaka-Nithi-Meru border,” he wrote.
Ruto explained that the announcements were made during his engagement with local traders and residents, which was part of a broader government programme to support small businesses and local economies.
“Addressed the people and traders of Makutano town in Meru after presiding over the NYOTA Business Start-Up Capital disbursement project at Kinoru Stadium,” the president wrote.

Beyond roads and transport, the President also spoke about healthcare, noting that Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital serves not only Meru residents but also patients from neighbouring counties. He said upgrading the facility would improve service delivery and reduce the need for patients to seek specialised care far from home.
“We have also committed to elevating Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital to a Level VI facility to guarantee quality, accessible and affordable medical care to the residents of the county and the region,” the statement reads.
