Ichung’wah: We are ready to resume bipartisan talks with opposition
National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah on Saturday, July 22, 2023, announced that the Kenya Kwanza administration was open to bipartisan talks with Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition if the talks solely focus on the recruitment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners (IEBC).
Addressing a crowd in Vihiga County, Ichung’wah stated that the motive of the talks is to enable the continuation of by-elections of other constituencies and wards that have no leaders.
“I want to agree with our religious leaders that we are ready to resume the bipartisan talks with that singular agenda of reconstituting our IEBC commissioners so that we can continue with the byelections of other constituencies and wards that don’t have leaders because of the paralysis at IEBC,” he stated.
The politician’s remarks came amidst calls from different religious leaders urging the two factions to resume the bipartisan talks so as to re-unite the country and end the weekly anti-government protests.
Azimio on the other hand reiterated that if the ruling coalition forms its own IEBC commissioners without their involvement they will not in any way associate with it.
They had also vowed to collect at least 10 million signatures so as to kick out the President William Ruto-led administration.
“We have understood that Kenya Kwanza brigade wants to go ahead and form a commission on its own. We will collect signatures from Kenyans and we will also form an electoral commission and carry out a referendum to delegitimize this regime,” the coalition leader Raila Odinga stated.
