‘I am still UDA secretary general’ – Cleophas Malala
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala now claims he is still the secretary general of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking during a church service at PEFA Thika Town Church, in Kiambu County, on Sunday, September 22, 2024, Malala stated that he is still the legal secretary general despite the party nominating Hassan Omar to take over from him.
Malala further added that the registrar of the political party’s office still recognises him as the secretary general of the ruling party.
He went on to say the one who took over him after his dramatic ouster was holding the position unlawfully.
“Mnajua vizuri sana mimi ndio katibu mkuu wa chama cha UDA, mimi Cleophas Malala. Kumekuwa na shida kidogo lakini bado katika ile register ya registrar of political parties mimi ndio katibu mkuu wa chama cha UDA,”Malala said.
Malala’s ouster
On August 2, 2024, Malala’s appointment as the secretary general was revoked by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
At the time, NEC, through a statement, indicated that the changes were effective immediately. The committee subsequently named Hassan who was the party’s vice chairperson as the new secretary general.
The ruling party announced that the decision followed a wide and consultative deliberation on the next course of action after events that unfolded in the party.
“Upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance and in accordance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan to act as the Secretary-General on an interim basis. The appointment of Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked,” UDA said.
“As the governing and policy-making organ of the party, the NEC plays an essential role in driving the political agenda of the party.”
UDA interim secretary general
On August 19, 2024, Hassan Omar was gazetted as the interim secretary general of the UDA.
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu announced that anyone differing with the changes should submit their views in writing within seven days.
“The Registrar of political parties gives notice that United Democratic Alliance (UDA) intends to change the following party official pending the interim party elections: Cleophas Malala former official, Hassan Omar current official,” Nderitu stated
“Any person with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall within seven (7) days from the date of this publication, deposit them with the Registrar of Political Parties.”
