Gideon Moi condemns Ang’ata Barikoi violence
The Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairman Gideon Moi has condemned the recent violence in Ang’ata Barikoi in Narok County, calling for justice, restraint and a lasting solution to the conflict that has rocked the area.
In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Moi said the country had once again witnessed a tragic outbreak of violence in Ang’ata Barikoi in Emurua Dikirr Constituency.
The former Baringo senator said the clashes had led to deaths, injuries and destruction of property, raising concerns about the growing insecurity in the area.
“Once again, the country has witnessed a tragic eruption of violence in Ang’ata Barikoi, Emurua Dikirr Constituency, resulting in the loss of lives, injuries, and destruction of property,” Moi said.
“These recurring incidents point to a worrying breakdown in law and order that must be addressed with urgency.”
The Ang’ata Barikoi violence has triggered fresh debate over security operations and long-running land disputes in the area. Residents have for years clashed over ownership and use of disputed land near the Narok-Migori border.
Moi urged residents to avoid violence while expressing their grievances. He also called on security officers to act with restraint during operations in the area.
“While efforts are underway to restore calm, it is imperative that residents reject violence as a means of expressing grievances and that security agencies exercise restraint and humanity in responding to the unrest,” he said.
“No cause, however legitimate, can justify the loss of innocent lives or the destruction of property.”

Call for rule of law
The KANU chairman said both the community and security agencies must commit themselves to peaceful solutions and respect for the rule of law.
“We therefore urge both the community and the security apparatus to uphold the rule of law and remain genuinely committed to resolving the underlying issues that continue to fuel tensions within the area,” Moi stated.
“The people of Ang’ata Barikoi deserve justice, security, and a lasting resolution to the issues at the heart of this conflict.”
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also addressed the Ang’ata Barikoi violence earlier, saying the government had ordered investigations into the incidents.
Murkomen said the Inspector-General of Police had been instructed to stop any operation that could put innocent civilians at risk.
“The events of the past few days in Ang’ata Barikoi, which have resulted in the tragic loss of a police officer, injuries to civilians, destruction of property, and loss of livestock, are deeply unfortunate and unacceptable,” Murkomen said in a statement.
He added that any police officer found to have used excessive force would be held accountable.
The latest unrest has again placed focus on the long-running land dispute in Ang’ata Barikoi. Government officials previously linked the clashes to disagreements over ownership and cultivation rights on contested land in the area.
The dispute has remained unresolved for years despite repeated interventions from government agencies and local leaders.
