Gachagua woos Nairobi residents to back bid to make Ruto one term president
Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua has criticised President William Ruto’s two-term agenda.
As Kenya gears up for the 2027 general elections, Gachagua took to his official X account on Friday, January 30, 2026, calling out Ruto’s regime for failing Kenyans, especially Nairobi city dwellers.
“WANTAM cannot be an option to a despotic regime, this is; it will be one term, round one and one way!” Gachagua said.
Goons menace
While strongly dismissing the two-term agenda, Gachagua recalled recent instances that have seen goons vandalise property, especially in Nairobi City, under what he described as police supervision on the watch.
His sentiments reflect the 2025 protests witnessed in Nairobi, where protests took a sinister turn as police officers and hired thugs joined forces in plain sight.
At the time, in a scene both brazen and unsettling, hired goons arrived on motorbikes, others armed with clubs and whips, terrorising innocent passers-by, all under the approving gaze of security forces.
Stench
Gachagua also addressed the state of the city, indicating that it was full of stench, accusing Ruto’s regime of enabling the rot.
“Nairobi stands tall in the world as a city of great reputation, but the misdeeds of a poor and national government have turned the city into a stench. We shall not keep quiet as goons under police supervision wreak havoc in the city and across the country among Kenyans,” Gachagua added.
Gachagua went on explaining the turn of events after marching to the Inspector General of Police office, demanding an upholding of the rule of law by Police Officers.
“After meeting and engaging the IG of police this afternoon, we met and greeted the great people of Wakulima in Nairobi and reported to them what we discussed; as a people, we shall not watch our nation descend into anarchy, we shall call out impunity by its name and meet it head on ahead of the 10th August 2027 polls!,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua’s march to IG Kanja
United Opposition leaders on January 30, 2026, marched to the Office of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja at Jogoo House, Nairobi, seeking engagement over what they described as persistent attacks, harassment, and security breaches targeting opposition figures and their supporters.
The delegation was led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and included Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, former Speaker Justin Muturi, and several elected leaders.
The march followed a notification letter dated January 29, 2026, in which Malala informed IG Kanja of the opposition’s intention to visit Jogoo House at 10 am to submit formal complaints and seek dialogue on the safety of opposition leaders and their supporters.
“Engagement with the Police IG, Jogoo House, Nairobi,” read Gachagua’s Facebook post.
Speaking in a media briefing after a session with the IG in Nairobi on Friday, January 30, 2026, the opposition said that the incident that happened in on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at a church in Othaya was not a usual incident.
