Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed the just-concluded public participation on his impeachment as a shoddy exercise.

Speaking during a press conference at his official Karen residence on Monday, October 7, 2024, evening, DP Gachagua revealed that his team of lawyers will challenge the public participation when he will appear before parliament on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, to defend himself against the allegations leveled against him.

According to Gachagua, he was not given a chance to give his side of the story in the forms given to Kenyans to fill.

He further argues that the accusations against him were attached to the forms in a highly legalistic language that was beyond the comprehension of many Kenyans.

While making reference to a Supreme Court ruling that saved former Embu county governor Peter Wambora from impeachment, Gachagua stated that the National Assembly hurriedly attempted to do public participation in a very shoddy exercise since his response was not part of what was presented to the people.

“Kenyans were asked to give their views as to whether the DP should be impeached from office and the accusations were attached but in a highly legalistic language beyond the comprehension of many Kenyans, my response was not there to enable them to make an informed decision. My lawyers will be challenging that public participation,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua on mover of motion

Gachagua went ahead to slam Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse for moving an impeachment motion that he has termed as extremely outrageous.

The second in command argued that Mutuse might have been given a document to sign, without doing research.

“The motion alleges that two years after assuming office, Rigathi Gachagua has acquired property and wealth whose estimated value is Ksh5.2 billion. This is extremely outrageous. Hon Mutuse goes ahead to give properties that he alleges are owned by Rigathi Gachagua. I trust he was given a document to sign, had he taken some bit of time to do some research, he would not have embarrassed himself at the National Assembly,” Gachagua stated.

DP Gachagua is set to appear before the parliament on Tuesday, October 8, to respond to the allegations levelled against him.
