Gachagua sides with senators in latest row with governors
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has supported the move by the senators to hold governors to account over the utilisation of county resources.
Addressing the press at the DCP headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the former deputy president said that most governors cannot account for resources allocated to their respective counties. Gachagua said that a huge number of county bosses have been mismanaging and embezzling public funds, and therefore, there is a need to put them in check.
“Most of these governors cannot complain of extortion. The reason they are being extorted, especially those from northern Kenya, is that they have stolen all the money from the people. I gather the senator’s reasoning since they have stolen from the people, they need to steal from them, but of course, two rights don’t make a right,” Gahagua said.

Gachagua has commended the senators and has said that they should continue demanding accountability from the governors.
On the other hand, Gachagua has also condemned the legislative houses over corruption and bribery, which he says has been propagated by the head of state, William Ruto. He has added that President Ruto has been bribing the Senate and the National Assembly members.
Ruto blamed for spreading corruption within govt
He has blamed President Ruto for spreading corruption in government, promising that when the united opposition takes office in 2027, bribery and corruption will be a thing of the past.
“Of course, the senate and the national assembly have been a theatre of corruption. When I was being haunted out of office, the senators who haunted me out of office were bribed with Ksh 20 million each and others were given Ksh 20 million. It is a den of corruption, and so is the national assembly and by extension all government institutions,” Gachagua added
Gachagua’s remarks follow the decision by the Council of Governors (CoG) to cease appearing before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC), citing harassment and political witch-hunting by the committee.
Speaking during the Governors’ Retreat in Mombasa on Monday, February 9, 2026, the Council of Governors explained that governors often face humiliation during the oversight engagements at the Senate.

“During the ongoing Governors’ Retreat, the Council of Governors has raised concern over the conduct of certain Senate Committees, citing cases of intimidation, harassment and humiliation of Governors during oversight engagements,” CoG said.
Nonetheless, Senate Speaker Amson Kingi dismissed their threat to snub the summons, insisting that senators are obliged to exercise their constitutional mandate.
