The Democracy for the Citizens Party leader and former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has hinted at backing the People’s Liberation Party leader, Martha Karua’s 2027 presidential ambitions.

Speaking during PLP’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, Gachagua said Karua has all it takes to lead the country as the Head of State.

”On behalf of DCP and our supporters across the cross, we congratulate Martha Karua for having been given the green light by her party to be a presidential candidate in the forthcoming general election, pongezi my sister and let me say I am happy because we now know she is available for the presidency,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua further described Karua, who was his opponent in the running mate race of the 2022 presidential election, as a leader with a national track record. Gachagua and Karua come together in the United Opposition that comprises other political outfits, such as the Wiper Party, DCP, DAP-Kenya, and Jubilee Party, among others.

”Martha Karua is one leader I believe in the journey of democracy and national liberation. This journey is difficult; many will fall, many will be bought, many will be compromised, but I do not doubt that Martha Karua will go to the end to liberate this country,”

Rigathi Gachagua said Kenya boasts of female leaders who have thrived in different sectors, further hinting at Mathar Karua flying the opposition’s flag in the 2027 presidential race.

Gachagua backs Karua’s presidential ambitions

”We are therefore very happy that her party has endorsed her as the presidential candidate, and as she has said, she has already started convincing us to think whether she can fly the flag, and we are saying women are great leaders in this country, not just in politics, in every sector; in business, in agriculture, in church..in all spheres of influence, our women have proven that they can be trusted with leadership. They are passionate and they mean well for the country,” Gachagua said.

Additionally, Gachagua challenged the electorate to make their choice wisely after heaping praise on Martha Karua’s legacy in politics.

”I am sure everyone knows that if Mathar Karua is elected the president of Kenya, she cannot steal from the people of Kenya. I do not think Karua will ever order people to be shot in the leg. I do not think Martha Karua, as a grandmother, can order the killing of Gen Zs. So we have a great leader and the people of Kenya have a choice to make,” the former Deputy President said.

Meanwhile, in the mix of the 2027 presidency in the opposition is Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i under the Jubilee ticket, as Rigathi Gachagua signalled shelving his presidential ambitions in favour of another candidate.
