From cheating death to rebuke of Raila: The political times of Enoch Kibunguchy
Former Likuyani Member of Parliament Enoch Wamalwa Kibunguchy passed away on December 23, 2025, while undergoing treatment in an Eldoret hospital after a prolonged illness.
His death came barely a month after he announced his intention to return to competitive politics by contesting the Likuyani MP seat in 2027.
Kibunguchy made the announcement during a DAP-K politicians’ meeting at his home in Kongoni, Likuyani, on November 3, 2025.
Kibunguchy’s journey in national politics began when he succeeded Cyrus Jirongo as Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency, serving from 2003 to 2007.
Elected MP
Following the subdivision of the constituency ahead of the 2013 elections, he became the founding MP for the newly created Likuyani Constituency, representing its residents for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2022.
Controversial moments
The MP, who served in the 12th Parliament (until 2022), was no stranger to controversy, with his scathing criticisms of former ODM leader Raila Odinga among the highlights.
In one of the most shocking developments, in August 2018, Kibunguchy narrowly escaped an assassination attempt that claimed the life of his driver.
The nighttime shooting occurred at Soy along the Eldoret–Kitale Highway.
His driver, Douglas Wanyonyi (also referred to as Douglas Wamakacha in some reports), was driving the vehicle while the MP was inside the motel meeting constituents; the MP was not in the car at the time.
Wanyonyi sustained a fatal shot to the head, with the assailants fleeing in the MP’s car.
Kibunguchy later claimed the attackers were targeting him and accused an unnamed political opponent of orchestrating the plot.

In 2021, the politician stirred further controversy by boldly declaring that his association with Raila Odinga was over following the latter’s handshake deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Previously a close ally of the former prime minister and part of the NASA coalition, Kibunguchy dumped Odinga just before the 2022 polls and launched a new onslaught against him.
Criticism of Raila
He described Raila as a politician plagued by bad omens, citing how the ODM leader had lost former close allies, including William Ruto, among others.
He claimed that the deal was his political Waterloo for Odinga and that the opposition veteran leader had lost the whole of Kenya and his dream to lead the country.
“Raila does not know how to keep friends; Ruto, who is giving him sleepless nights, was his ally. After the Hague, Raila abandoned him and said everyone should carry his own cross,” he said.
“He has now lost Western, and whatever he does will never lead this nation. Ukambani, Turkana, North Rift, and other regions are also out of his grasp, so where else will he get the votes?” He posed.
Beyond politics, the politician was a professional medical doctor operating medical facilities in Eldoret Town and his home.
He also served in senior roles in Kenya’s health sector.
