Fred Gumo: Amos Wako has endorsed Sifuna’s presidential ambitions
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 25, 2026Veteran politician and former Westlands Member of Parliament Fred Gumo has intimated that former Attorney General and Busia Senator Amos Wako has thrown his weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has declared his interest in vying for the country’s top seat.
Speaking during an interview with local media stations from Western Kenya aired on Friday, July 25, 2026, Gumo said he had recently held discussions with Wako, who is currently in Geneva, and claimed that the former Busia senator had expressed his support for Sifuna’s presidential bid.
“I have spoken to Amos Wako, who is currently in Geneva, and he has told me he supports Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid,” Gumo claimed.
He further revealed that he had held talks with various elders from the Western Kenya region, who had also agreed to rally behind the Nairobi senator. Gumo acknowledged that Sifuna’s political star was on the rise, adding that it was the people who had nurtured and elevated him politically.
He urged the Western Kenya community to unite behind the Nairobi senator. He called on veteran politicians and elders from the region to fully support the former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General.
Gumo argued that the time had come for Western Kenya to produce the country’s leadership, citing the prophecy of the late Elijah Masinde, who is said to have foretold that the region’s leadership would emerge from the lakeside. According to Gumo, following Raila Odinga’s political exit, the mantle of leadership had been passed to Edwin Sifuna.
Mulembe unity
Addressing the long-held perception that Western Kenya lacks political unity, Gumo said the 2027 general election would present the region with its first real opportunity to unite. He argued that previous attempts at unity had failed because the community lacked a unifying figure but maintained that Sifuna had now emerged as that leader.
He also warned against any attempts to disrupt Sifuna’s homecoming rally scheduled to be held at Bungoma Posta Grounds on July 26, 2026, saying such attempts would be firmly resisted. However, he called on residents to maintain peace and turn up in large numbers for what he described as a highly anticipated gathering.
Gumo’s urge to Wetang’ula
Gumo also challenged National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, urging them to either support Sifuna or step aside. He argued that the two leaders had previously had opportunities to contest for the presidency but failed to secure the country’s top seat and should now allow “their son” Sifuna to pursue the position.
On the other hand, Amos Wako has been a trustee of the ODM party and was, on many occasions, the one who tried to reconcile the two warring factions within the party.
