Mourners in Nyamira county were on Friday treated to a rare spectacle when a Governor told one of his counterparts not to bother defending his seat in 2027 because he would lose.

Narok Governor, Patrick Ole Ntuntu, told his Nyamira colleague Amos Nyaribo that it would be political suicide for Nyaribo to try and defend his seat. Instead, Ole Ntuntu advised the Nyamira gubernatorial chief to consider stepping down in favour of a more youthful candidate.

Ole Ntuntu’s words took everyone by surprise.

“My friend Governor Nyaribo, it is high time you quit politics in favour of this young man Walter Chanua. You worked with my father a long, long time ago and I strongly feel it is high time you hanged your political boots to the younger generation,” Ntuntu said.

Traditional blessing

Ole Ntuntu was speaking at Ekerenyo playground in the North Mugirango constituency during the burial of Mzee Peter Chanua. The deceased was the father of Walter Chanua, the Director of Finance in Narok County.

Ole Ntuntu then invited Walter onto the podium and blessed him as per the Maasai tradition.

“This is a good worker. He has made my county to be ranked number one in terms of revenue collection, management of county resources and development,” he narrated as the mourners applauded.

Emurr Dikirr MP Johannah Ng’eno who accompanied Ole Ntuntu also endorsed Walter saying he was up to the task.

“If you will not vote for him, tell us and we will take him back to Narok county and elect him as our governor after the retirement of Ole Ntuntu,” Ng’eno stated.

Nyaribo, however, brushed off Ole Ntuntu’s assertions, saying that he could only hand over power to Walter after his retirement.

“Everyone is entitled to his own views and those are your own views. But Walter should wait until after my retirement in 2032,” Nyaribo said.
