Five senators from the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) attended the Senate sitting on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, dressed in the party’s official green blazers as celebrations over their victory in the Ol Kalou by-election continued.

The lawmakers, all from the Mt Kenya region, arrived at Parliament wearing green blazers paired with grey trousers in a show of unity and party solidarity.

They included Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Kajiado Senator John Seki, Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango, and Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu.

Their appearance came just days after the Ol Kalou by-election, where the senators actively campaigned for DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho.

Led by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, the leaders traversed the constituency rallying support for Ngotho, who went on to win the seat by a landslide after garnering more than 35,000 votes.

The display also comes at a time when DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his campaign to position DCP as the dominant political outfit in the Mt Kenya region. Speaking after the by-election victory, Gachagua declared that DCP is now the region’s official party, insisting that no other political party would be allowed to gain a foothold there.

Mt kenya wheelbarrow parties

He dismissed rival parties as “wheelbarrow parties”, stating that they are projects sponsored by President William Ruto to divide the Mt Kenya voting bloc. Gachagua further claimed that the President is planning to establish another political party in Murang’a County, adding that he would reveal more details, including those behind the plan, in the coming days.

The former Deputy President also expressed confidence that DCP would perform strongly in the 2027 General Election, saying the party is targeting more than 20 senators, over 20 governors and at least 130 members of Parliament.

He urged Mt Kenya residents to rally behind DCP, arguing that it would be the only viable political party in the region by 2027.

Gachagua’s Kirinyaga lineup

The Senate show of party colours also comes days after Gachagua unveiled what appeared to be his preferred political lineup for Kirinyaga County ahead of the 2027 polls.

During the event, he appeared to endorse Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango for the governor’s seat while backing Woman Representative Jane Njeri to retain her position and David Mathenge for the senate seat.
