President William Ruto’s administration has come under sharp criticism from the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), as political temperatures begin to rise ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a scathing rebuke posted on its X account on Sunday, July 13, 2025, DAP-K signalled a renewed push to challenge the ruling coalition’s grip on power.

Ahadi za uongo (false promises.) Kenyans have experienced the most dishonest, untrustworthy and power-hungry regime that rode on hope but now is built on lies.

“They must go,” read the post from the party’s official handle.

The message, laced with frustration and rallying energy, reflects a broader sense of disillusionment with the Kenya Kwanza administration, particularly around unmet promises on the economy, youth employment, and the high cost of living.

Ruto, who came into power in 2022 on a populist platform as a ‘hustler’ president, now faces growing resentment from the very demographic that once fuelled his rise.

DAP-K, part of the United Opposition, has mostly played a quieter role since the 2022 elections, but its latest post signals a shift, one that suggests the party is preparing for a more aggressive political campaign leading into 2027.

Ruto’s recent tours across the country have been heavy on defence, justifying the state of the economy and blaming global conditions and past regimes for current hardships. Meanwhile, opposition voices are growing louder, framing the 2027 contest as not just a political competition but a battle for truth and accountability.

DAP-K’s timing is deliberate. With just over two years to the next election, early positioning is key, and tapping into public frustration could re-energise its base. Whether the party can convert this online bravado into grassroots momentum remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the gloves are off, and the road to 2027 has already begun.

The 2027 contest

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chief remains defiant, dismissing claims of being intimidated by the emerging political formations.

He has insisted his focus is on advancing Kenya’s development agenda, though critics argue his policies have waned in popularity.

“Those people (opposition leaders), I will triumph over them in 2027. Though my focus now is on development. They have no agenda. They only talk about one term.” The Head of State said during a past rally.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the United Opposition will unveil a single presidential candidate in December to face President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.

Gachagua, who spoke on Friday, July 11, 2025, during one of his engagements with Kenyans living in the United States, said the opposition have agreed to set aside personal ambitions and rally behind one candidate, who will be picked through consensus.

“Around December, we’ll produce one candidate to face him,” Gachagua announced.
