Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has rejected renewed suggestions that he is President William Ruto’s mole within the opposition party.

Malala told a local radio station on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, that his previous association with Ruto should not be used to question his loyalty to DCP.

“You cannot edit someone’s past. If you were my friend in the past, you cannot edit that. Truth be told, I was a friend of William Ruto, and politically, we disagreed. That is why I am saying I want him to be Wantam,” Malala said.

Malala turns mole label on Gachagua

The former Kakamega senator maintained that his political disagreement with Ruto did not erase their previous friendship.

He also stated that he cannot rule out the possibility of working with anyone, including President William Ruto.

“But that does not mean he was never my friend. Therefore, wanting to associate me with Ruto and wanting to call everyone a mole means all DCP members are moles, and the biggest mole is Rigathi Gachagua,” he said.

Malala argued that Gachagua had worked more closely with Ruto than most DCP officials before their political fallout.

“Because if that is what you are insinuating, and you are calling me a mole because of my association with Ruto in the past, then Gachagua is the biggest one because he was Deputy President,” he stated.

Political relationships keep changing

Malala said political engagements should not prevent leaders from communicating with people in rival formations.

“But as we are speaking right now, political engagements are dynamic, and we keep changing our minds,” he said.

He cited the evolving relationship between Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who are currently associated with the broader opposition movement.

“For instance, the same people who impeached Rigathi Gachagua, including Edwin Sifuna, are now talking with Gachagua. Is Sifuna a mole?” Malala asked.

“Nobody can stop me from talking to people,” he added.

Malala has previously faced criticism over his meetings with politicians and government officials associated with Ruto.

In March 2026, he rejected accusations that he was a mole. He maintained that nobody could dictate whom he met.

The latest remarks come amid continued debate about Malala’s political future and his relationship with sections of DCP.
