Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku has claimed that a large majority of voters in Meru County will support President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a local television interview on Sunday, June 15, 2026, Ruku said support for the president in the region remains strong and predicted a decisive victory in the area.

“Wananchi wa kona hii si wajinga. 70 per cent ya watu wa Meru wataamka asubuhi waseme mtoto yao ni Kindiki, rais wao ni William Ruto, na wapigie William Ruto kura turudi,” he said.

His remarks come at a time when Mount Kenya politics has remained sharply contested, with leaders pushing competing narratives over loyalty, succession and the future balance of power.

Ruku framed his comments as a reflection of political confidence in the region, arguing that residents understand their choices and will back the Kenya Kwanza administration once again.

The CS also expressed confidence that his side will perform well in the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election. He dismissed doubts over the outcome and said the ruling coalition is well placed to win.

When asked directly whether they expect victory, he replied, “Tutashinda asubuhi mapema.”

Defence of the Deputy President’s position

Ruku also strongly defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, rejecting the ongoing political debate about succession or any possible vacancy in the office.

He said critics were wasting time discussing the position, insisting it remains firmly occupied and politically secure.

“On losing the DP seat to others: Nobody can take the DP position from us because we are not fools. We will defend this seat with all that we have,” he said.

His remarks reflect a wider political message from government allies who have repeatedly insisted that the Deputy President’s position is not under negotiation.

Ruku has in past speeches also argued that the Kenya Kwanza administration remains united and focused on delivery rather than internal competition.

2032 succession politics

The CS also touched on the growing debate around the 2032 succession race, stating that political leaders are already positioning themselves for future contests.

He suggested that Kindiki will not remain Deputy President by that time, but instead will pursue higher office.

“Wanasiasa wote wagarazane wajue ni nani atakuwa rais wa Jamhuri ya Kenya. Kindiki hatakuwa naibu wa rais 2032. Atakuwa anauwania kiti ya rais wa taifa letu la Kenya,” Ruku said.

He added that political competition will extend across all regions of the country, saying leaders should prepare for a national contest involving multiple candidates.

“Yeye na wale wengine wa kona zote za taifa letu la Kenya… Wewe Farouk kuja na candidate wako wa rais wewe mtu ya Coast, kuja na candidate yako ya rais, sisi tutaenda na candidate wetu anaitwa Kithure Kindiki,” he added.

The remarks underline early positioning among Kenya Kwanza allies, who appear to be laying the groundwork for post-2027 leadership battles.

Ruku’s comments add to ongoing political messaging from Mount Kenya leaders who have consistently defended the current administration and rejected opposition claims.

Recent months have seen leaders in the region insist that government projects and political inclusion have strengthened support for the Kenya Kwanza alliance.

However, opposition-aligned figures continue to challenge this narrative, arguing that voter sentiment is shifting ahead of 2027.

Mount Kenya East remains a key battleground due to its large voter base and increasing political mobilisation by both government and opposition camps.

The remarks by Ruku come amid heightened political activity across the country as parties prepare for upcoming elections and by-elections.
