‘99.9% of Presidential result forms were transmitted to the portal within 24 hours’ – Chebukati
Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has revisited the August 2022 election to defend its credibility.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 24, 2023, Chebukati said that almost all Presidential results forms from all polling stations were electronically transmitted to the public portal within 24 hours.
“99.9% of Presidential result forms were electronically transmitted to the public portal within 24 hours of closure of polls,” Chebukati stated.
“IEBC tally results from Presidential elections, as the law says, must be electronically transmitted. We processed and transmitted these results in a quick and speedy manner. The tally results were available to stakeholders and the public to view. We worked very well with the telecommunications service providers and in a few areas where there was no network we had to bring in satellite modems.”
Chebukati’s sentiments come a year after the opposition led by Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party moved to the Supreme Court to dispute the Presidential results.
In one of its demands, Azimio asked the Supreme Court to issue orders for an audit of IEBC servers, which they claimed hold the ‘real’ Presidential results.
Chebukati announces President-elect
In the results announced by IEBC on August 15, 2022, Chebukati announced William Ruto as the winner of the election with 7,176,141 votes, which is 50.49% of the total votes cast.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga came second after garnering 6,942,930 votes (48.85%).
The declaration came moments after four IEBC commissioners led by former Vice Chair Juliana Cherera distanced themselves from the results citing opaqueness.
To date, the opposition has been demanding an audit of IEBC servers, claiming that rigging happened in favour of Ruto.
