Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has stated that if the opposition doesn’t unite, William Ruto will win by 100 per cent.

While speaking during an interview on Herman Manyora’s podcast aired on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the outspoken Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful stated that unity is the only way for the opposition to defeat Ruto in 2027.

He went ahead to urge the united opposition principals not to be selfish, saying each should be ready to shelve his or her ambitions for the sake of the other if they want to win the upcoming elections.

According to Babu, if each person within the opposition runs independently, it will scatter the opposition vote, giving Ruto an easy and early win.

“If the opposition is united, if Ruto is to go home, if they are united, it will be a 100 per cent win for them,” he said.

“They should not be selfish; each one of them should be ready to shelve their ambitions.”

United Opposition unity

This comes at a time when the united opposition principals have already vowed that, when the appropriate time comes, each of them will shelve their ambitions and support one chosen candidate to be their flag bearer against Ruto.

The Linda Mwananchi team, which Babu Owino is part of, has also shown interest in teaming up with the united opposition in order to realise their joint aspiration of making Ruto a one-term president.

Their team leader, Edwin Sifuna, was the first to openly express willingness to work with the United Opposition. According to Sifuna, there is a common understanding among Kenyans that for Ruto to be defeated, there must be an overwhelming repudiation from Kenyans and that leaders within the opposition must approach the 2027 elections as a united force.

He added that he does not want to be part of a vote-splitting mechanism, as seen in the past. He urged the united opposition to continue with their endeavours, noting that at the right time, their paths will meet.

The same has been echoed by Vihiga senator Godfrey Osotsi, who said that although it is too early to talk about a pact between the Linda Mwananchi team and the united opposition, they will eventually come together and plan how to realise their shared goal.

Siaya governor James Orengo, who is also an integral member of the Linda Mwananchi team, has echoed similar sentiments.

The united opposition, led by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, have also extended an olive branch to the Linda Mwananchi team, saying that if they present a formidable candidate, the united alternative government principals are ready to shelve their ambitions and support their counterparts in the Sifuna-led team.
